It’s Kitu’s Fund To The Rescue Once Again For This Injured Stray Dog

It never fails to amaze me that the dogs who most need our help have the most loving hearts. Sometimes we have to wait a little longer for a timid or badly abused dog to feel safe. But quite often our sweetest dogs are the ones who’ve had the worst experiences. Take the gentle malinois who showed up next door with not one but two broken legs. At barely a year old, Kaya has already suffered more than any dog ever should. Yet this injured stray dog is brimming with love. Thankfully, with the help of Kitu’s Fund, Kaya has a bright future.

Kindness and healing for an injured stray dog

Kaya can’t tell us her story, so we’ll never know for sure how she broke her legs. The vet suspects she might have been kicked, possibly by livestock. Whatever happened, our neighbor found this beautiful injured malinois curled up with her own dogs one evening in mid-May. Thank goodness Kaya knew where to find help!

Though extremely thin, Kaya was bright, responsive and incredibly sweet. X-rays revealed two separate fractures in her right front and back legs. Keeping a young malinois calm at the best of times is no easy task, and broken bones take weeks to heal. We knew that a double surgery was the best option for Kaya’s full recovery.

Kaya came through her surgeries with flying colors and is convalescing at the Sanctuary. She’s one of the kindest, most gentle dogs I’ve ever met. It was almost impossible to get a picture of her, though, because she kept wriggling up as close as possible!

Caregivers took off her plastic collar for pictures. But keeping her still was another thing! Even as a convalescent Kaya is full of energy and constantly in motion.

What broke my heart was the way she habitually drops to the ground and grovels submissively when approached. She yearns for contact, but it’s clear she expects rough treatment. I told her she’ll never be punished or mistreated again.

As of this writing, Kaya’s stitches are out and she’s finally collar-free. However she still needs to stay as quiet as possible for another four weeks until her fractures have fully healed.

Kaya is surrounded with love in a positive environment. Already people-oriented and incredibly loving, she’ll gain self-confidence as she experiences praise and kindness. When she’s ready, she will be a dream companion for anyone who can keep up with a malinois!

Kaya’s surgeries came to a total cost of $5,865 and she’s not our first high-cost surgery this year. We couldn’t do what we do for stray dogs like Kaya without Kitu’s Fund. Our high-cost and emergency fund enables us to give sick and injured dogs the second chance they deserve. But funds are extremely low and there are so many dogs who need our help.
