My mother-in-law just passed away very unexpectedly and we are desperately trying to re-home her Australian Cattle Dog.
Her dog Dexter is very sweet, great with people and cats, neutered, current on vaccinations, and about 4 years old. He is great on a leash and crate trained, very smart and eager to please, and would do best in a single dog home with someone that understands the herding dog breed. I only mention single dog home, because he has not had the opportunity to be with other dogs (he lived with a single woman in a retirement community) – I’m certain with time he would be great with them, but want to be transparent about what he has experienced.
He is actually very calm for a herding dog, and loves learning new things. He can be a little shy when he is uncertain or in new situations (e.g., getting in a new car), but is highly toy and treat motivated and quickly becomes comfortable and confident. He is amazingly well behaved on a leash – he does not bark or react to other dogs/people/birds/cats/etc. other than to look interested. He is also very well behaved inside the house – and will clearly let you know when he needs to go outside. He will make someone a loving and wonderful companion and has been through so much, we are desperately trying to find a home where he can live (even if only a foster home), rather than a shelter. We will drive him anywhere in CA.
