Rescue Staff Meet The Challenge As Emergency Dog Rescue Cases Ramp Up

It’s only been two weeks, but so far May has been a conveyor belt of calls about dogs in need, keeping rescue staff busier than ever. Sanctuary Operations Manager Laura Finley filled me in on the wonderful pups they’ve helped.

Rescue staff on-call nonstop so far in May

May 1 – Two dogs in the woods

Siskiyou County Animal Control (SCAC) asked for assistance with two dogs found huddled in the woods. Maynard, a handsome young retriever mix, was in reasonably good condition. But Diva, a beautiful pittie and recent mom, was dangerously emaciated.

She’s visibly improved after two weeks of frequent small meals at the Sanctuary, and her hopeful expression is irresistible. Once she’s healthy and spayed, rescue staff will help her find a loving home.

May 3 – Puppy hit by a car

Mt. Shasta Animal Hospital called about a puppy hit by a car. The owner couldn’t afford care but was willing to surrender. Rescue staff stabilized Olivia at the Sanctuary until she could undergo the first of two surgeries. I was on site when Executive Director John Golay arrived with a sweet-tempered (and clearly exhausted) post-op Olivia. She’ll receive meds and round-the-clock care.

May 4 – Good samaritans find dumped dog

An out-of-state couple found a dog dumped at Pluto’s Cave. With SCAC closed for the weekend, the Sanctuary made room. Pluto is young, healthy, lively, and eager to interact. He’ll make a wonderful companion for an active family.

May 5 – Yes. More puppies…

Six youngsters were found abandoned on a blanket along a country road. Rescue staff quarantined them in the puppy village. Other than some slight congestion, they appear healthy and people-oriented.

The Sanctuary also took in three young Lab-mixes belonging to a community member desperate to place them. The mother was scheduled for spay on our upcoming RAAPP run.

May 6 – Kitu’s Fund dog and wolf hybrids

An owner approached Rescue Ranch for help with a severely injured dog. We were able to cover the vet and leg amputation costs through Rescue Ranch’s Kitu’s Fund. Pepper is recuperating at the Adoption Center before returning home.

That same day, a volunteer transporter needed help removing a wolf hybrid from a notorious local situation. Thankfully, rescue staff could accommodate the dog overnight as well as help capture another hybrid the following day. Both have now moved to appropriate sanctuaries out-of-state.

May 7 – Enter Titan, the regal Tibetan mastiff

At the request of SCAC, rescue staff took in a magnificent Tibetan mastiff from the same property. He’ll need medical assessment for walking difficulties before becoming available. Majestic Titan gave me the royal treatment, getting up to say hello before lying down again in a lion pose. I’ve rarely seen such a stunning dog.

May 11 – And… more puppies

Carmelita, a fearful terrier mix from Fresno, surprised Laura with two newborns. Rescue contacts warned that pregnancy was a possibility but there were no signs until they appeared. Camelita is skittish, but Laura is monitoring the new family closely.

And we’re only half way through the month!
