Paul Simon took his inspiration for his 1983 song, “René and Georgette Magritte With Their Dog After the War,” from a photo taken shortly before the surrealist painter’s death. In fact, Magritte had several loulou Pomeranians over the years. Rather unimaginatively, he named two of them LouLou, and two, Jackie. I sense a pattern. But then, the repetition might have been the point. Magritte painted the same themes over and over again throughout his lifetime.
