The most common myth about dog saliva is that it will heal your wounds. It won’t. It does have some antibacterial properties with possible curative effects: for your dog, not for you. But even for your dog excessive licking, resident bacteria in the saliva, and the added moisture often does more harm than good. What is not a myth is that if you’re allergic to dogs, it may be to the proteins in their saliva rather than to their dander. This information isn’t terribly helpful because when the saliva dries on the fur the proteins becomes airborn…like dander.
