Microchipping Saves Lives
How will you locate your dog if it gets out of your yard, or if you're separated while traveling or during an emergency? How can you help first responders, rescuers and vets locate you if they find your dog?
A microchip is a permanent ID that more than doubles your chances of reuniting with your lost dog. According to one study in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the numbers go from 22% for unchipped dogs to 56% for dogs with microchips. The numbers are even higher for cats (we don't chip cats, but we do recommend asking your vet or local cat rescue about chipping kitty too).
How do microchips work? A tiny oblong chip is injected beneath the skin behind the head on the neck area, above or between the shoulder blades. The microchip number and your contact information is then registered online on a pet recovery database. Anyone who finds your dog can ask a vet, a shelter, animal control, and even some pet stores, to scan for a chip. If they find one, they can check online to identify and contact the registered owner.
We strongly recommend microchipping your pet. It could mean the difference between losing your furry friend forever or bringing them home to you where they belong. It is easy, inexpensive, effective, and no more painful than a vaccine.
