Much as we wish to, we can’t take in every dog whose family can no longer care for them. Our finite capacity, strained resources, and the flood of at-risk strays in our own county keeps our hands tied. But every now and then we’re able to make an exception. That’s what this week’s story is all about. We recently accepted a pair of very loved dogs surrendered to us under tragic circumstances. Now we need your help finding them a foster or forever home.
An exception for a special case
Kira, a 5-year-old Siberian husky, and Iris, a 3-year-old retriever, have just had their lives turned upside down. Their owner was a member of the armed services who passed away this summer upon returning home from deployment. His mother, a senior, has known these dogs from puppyhood and loves them dearly. But at her age she is simply unable to take on their care. So she reached out to us for help.
We receive dozens of requests every week from families looking to surrender their dogs. Though we understand how frustrating it can be for owners searching for solutions, we just can’t accept them all. In most cases, we recommend owners to try every possible avenue for rehoming their dog. These include sharing a courtesy post via our website, contacting breed-specific rescues, networking on social media, and posting flyers in pet-related businesses. With patience and persistence these steps will lead to success.
In this case, Kira and Iris’ story felt unique. Their owner’s service to our country and the tragedy of his passing touched us deeply. We agreed to accept his beloved dogs into our care.
Two beautiful dogs seek a foster or forever home–together
Kira and Iris were lovingly raised as members of the family and absolutely adore attention. In fact, as soon as you enter their yard they try to climb into your lap! They’re beautiful, well-behaved, well-adjusted, and deeply bonded to each other. We’d like to keep these girls together in honor of their late owner’s memory.
Kira and Iris are up to date on their medical with the exception of a spay surgery for Iris. This surgery has been lovingly sponsored by their owner’s mother, and we will fit her into our vet schedule at the first opportunity. Both dogs are house-trained, moderately active, and love to play ball. They love everyone they meet, get along well with other dogs, and are kid safe. They’re both absolute darlings and will make fantastic family companions. We’re looking for a foster or forever home to cherish these two as their late owner would wish.
