The AKC only recognized the puffin-hunting Norwegian lundehund in 2011. The breed remains relatively unknown, despite its many positive characteristics. Lundehunds are friendly, compact, double-coated, northern dogs. They also have six fully developed toes on each foot for a total of 24, rather than the more usual 18 functional toes! The extra digits provide more gripping power for scaling the rocky cliffs where puffins nest. Lundehunds tend be good family dogs. They’re a fun-loving breed that needs regular exercise and mental engagement. Their training should always be gentle and take into account their sensitive nature.
