It was once thought that golden retrievers descended from Russian circus dogs, but it turns out that they originated in the Scottish Highlands: Guisachan House, once the residence of breeder Lord Tweedmouth of Inverness. In 1864, he bred a wavy-coated retriever named Nous and a Tweed water spaniel named Belle who gave birth to the first litter of golden retrievers. The rest is history!
