In 18th century England,“chow chow” was any novelty that came from the Far East. The term may derive from the Mandarin word “cha,” meaning mixed. It applied to any new curiosity: food, furniture, clothing, baubles, jewelry. And, apparently, one particularly independent, teddy-bearish, Chinese dog with a blue tongue!
