It seems that the word “puppy”may derive from the french word for doll, poupée. It only came into use at the end of the 16th century. Before that, baby dogs were referred to as whelps. It may surprise you to learn that one of the earliest uses of the term “puppy-dog” in literature was by Shakespeare in King John written during that period.
